Emergency responders in North Carolina are getting autism training to improve communication, reduce trauma, and deliver more compassionate care in critical moments.
Emergency Autism Training Is Saving Lives in NC

Emergencies are stressful for anyone—but for individuals on the autism spectrum, they can be downright overwhelming. Sirens, flashing lights, loud voices, physical contact, and fast-paced decision-making can all trigger sensory overload, anxiety, or shutdown. And in those critical moments, how a first responder communicates can either de-escalate or unintentionally make things worse.

That’s why a growing movement in North Carolina is gaining traction: training emergency service personnel on how to interact more effectively with autistic individuals.

Recently, teams from across Watauga County—including EMS, fire, and law enforcement—attended a specialized training hosted by the Autism Society of North Carolina. Held at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, the session focused on helping first responders recognize the broad spectrum of autism and how to adjust their approach to each unique situation.

More Than Protocol—It’s About Compassion

The goal of this training wasn’t to memorize a checklist. It was about shifting mindset.

As Watauga County Rescue Squad Chief Nate McCoy put it, “This ensures effective communication and a more patient-centered approach to care.” McCoy organized the session after a recent emergency call involving an autistic patient made him realize how limited their standard training was.

Chief Steve Marks of the Cove Creek Volunteer Fire Department echoed the sentiment: “We are encountering patients with autism spectrum disorder more frequently… this training will help us offer more effective and compassionate care.”

And it’s not just about children. Adults with autism are often overlooked in emergency protocols. These trainings emphasized that autism affects people across the lifespan—and that recognizing signs, responding calmly, and communicating clearly can prevent trauma during moments that are already incredibly vulnerable.

Why This Matters for Families Across North Carolina

Families of individuals with autism often carry an invisible burden when it comes to emergency planning. What if my child bolts? What if they don’t respond to police commands? What if they can’t communicate their pain?

Knowing that local emergency crews are being trained to recognize, understand, and respond to those needs is more than comforting—it’s lifesaving.

As providers of autism services in North Carolina, we know how essential it is for our broader community—not just therapists and educators, but emergency responders too—to understand autism from a place of empathy and real knowledge.

We believe that building truly inclusive support means extending that care beyond the home and therapy center. That includes school systems, public spaces, and yes—emergency rooms and roadside scenes.
