NC State Launches Inclusive Program for Students with Disabilities
For students with intellectual and developmental disabilities—including autism—college was once considered out of reach. But that’s changing in North Carolina. A groundbreaking program at NC State University called Elevate is now opening doors to higher education, social connection, and career development for students who have traditionally been left out of the college experience.
This new four-year, non-degree inclusive post-secondary education program is designed specifically for students with disabilities like autism or Down syndrome. Thanks to a $3 million allocation from the North Carolina General Assembly, Elevate is providing a structured pathway for students to gain vocational skills, explore employment opportunities, and immerse themselves in college life—on their own terms.
Real-World Skills, Real College Experiences
Unlike traditional special education programs, Elevate is deeply integrated into the NC State community. Students will attend actual academic courses alongside their peers, participate in clubs, cheer at sporting events, and gain the full experience of being a college student. At the same time, they’ll engage in personalized training to build employment readiness and independent living skills.
Tamira White, the program’s manager, explains it best: “They’ll have an opportunity to explore career paths they may or may not have already thought about.” The curriculum is built around student interests, empowering them to grow both personally and professionally.
The first spring cohort will begin as commuters, with residential housing options becoming available in the fall. To qualify, applicants must be North Carolina residents and at least 18 years old. Applications are now open and due by October 1.
A Milestone for Autism and Disability Inclusion in Education
The launch of Elevate is a major step forward in inclusion. It affirms what families, advocates, and professionals have known for years: with the right supports, students with disabilities can thrive in post-secondary education. It’s about more than academics—it’s about helping every student build the confidence, skills, and independence they need to live a fulfilling life.
Programs like this don’t just benefit students. They also create a more understanding, diverse, and compassionate campus culture—one where differences are celebrated and neurodiverse learners are truly seen and supported.
